Swell Magnet Surf ForecastWelcome February! Looks like, what I consider to be our last real month of the Winter surf season, should start off with some decent waves and remain in the moderate zone all the way through Super Bowl Sunday.Wednesday morning will be in the chest to shoulder high zone for the better West facing breaks on the medium tide. A nearly 6 foot high tide around 8:30AM will put most breaks in a sleeper hold until mid morning. The swell is dropping fast, so I'd take a look at the cams early to see if you're spot is even breaking before rolling down to the beach. On Thursday morning we'll see some new, long interval swell build in through day. Things will start off slow for the morning session, but scout sets should start to show later in the morning and fill in through the day. This energy has quite a bit of West in it, coming in at a 275-290 degree angle, and should put the best West facing breaks into the well overhead zone by sundown. By Friday morning it should be an all systems go scenario. I can't promise you shape, but that long interval, NW energy will put the top West facing breaks in the overhead to a few feet overhead range, (possibly even bigger for the deepwater canyon spots). The tide cycle will continue to improve for the dawn patrollers as we wind our way into the weekend. On Saturday morning we'll still have plenty of surf out of the NW with the better spots remaining in the overhead zone. We'll also see another band of NW swell fill in right on the heels of it's predecessor. This one will be a hair smaller, but come in from a similarly Westerly angle. The conditions should be pretty good but the wind models are putting a little more North in the wind direction for some areas. Super Steeler Sunday morning should be another pretty fun morning as all swell starts to taper off through the day. The morning session should be good though with favorable tides and conditions. The West facing breaks will, once again, pack the most punch, so get out there and have fun. Be sure to get back in time to watch Aaron Rodgers get all his teeth knocked out and the Packers reduced to cheese whiz. This is M.D., the Surf Dr., delivering more hollow promises. Dick Dale @ Brixton: Friday, February 4, 2011 - 8:00 PM - CloseDick Dale wasn't nicknamed "King of the Surf Guitar" for nothing: he pretty much invented the style single-handedly, and no matter who copied or expanded upon his blueprint, he remained the fieriest, most technically gifted musician the genre ever produced. One of Dick Dale’s most significant attributes was the fact that he was left-handed and forced to learn on a right-handed guitar. Instead of restringing the guitar to make playing easier, he adapted to playing it “upside down” and “backwards.” Dale was asked to test a new guitar design by Leo Fender, called the Fender Stratocaster. Dale eventually outfitted the Stratocaster with heavy gauge strings to maximize his sound. In addition, Fender gave Dale amps to use; however, Dale kept blowing the amps with his explosive playing style. This inspired Leo Fender to create a 100-watt amplifier specifically for Dale, which would peak at 180-watts. Dick Dale was truly a powerful player. Check him out at BriXton playing all his classic hits including Miserlou! |
