37TH ANNUAL MANHATTAN BEACH HOMETOWN FAIR: SATURDAY OCT. 3- SUNDAY OCT. 4

One of the best-kept secrets in the South Bay each year is coming soon! The 37th Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is being held on October 3-4, 2009. The Hometown Fair is unique, as it unites the community with all proceeds going to local non-profits, with local residents running the whole deal. This year, there will be free parking and free shuttles running all day from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

There will be all of the regular Fair activities, such as Arts & Crafts, face painting and the Ring Toss. Don't miss the annual Manhattan Beach Hometown 10K Run, or the designated Free Speech area. You'll regret it if you miss the fair this year! Head over to the site for much more info, including the Beer Garden, shuttle schedule and other activities.

 

 

JOHN LEE HOOKER JR. @ SAINT ROCKE: FRIDAY, OCT. 2

 

Don't miss the famous John Lee Hooker Jr. at Saint Rocke this Friday night! Born in Detroit "Motor" City with Delta blues-filled blood running through his Motown veins, the son of a 20th Century blues legend, has crafted his own fiery, funky brand of stinging blues.
He has released three albums - Blues with a Vengeance, Cold As Ice, ALL ODDS AGAINST ME.

The son of the great John Lee Hooker, he was exposed the life of the blues from a young age. At only eight years old Jr. performed on Detroit's WJBK radio and knew from that moment that he wanted to follow the path of his father and become a world-class musician. Touring alongside Hooker, Sr. throughout his teens, Jr. had already performed in prestigious venues such as Detroit's Fox Theatre with acclaimed musicians like Jimmy Reed by the time he was 16. In 1972, an eighteen year-old John Jr. was singing vocals alongside his father for the recording of Hooker, Sr.'s album Live at Soledad Prison.
After going through many personal struggles in his life, Hooker Jr. finally found his own inner muse, making music that expresses the depth of emotion he has experienced in his personal life.

Old Venice Manhattan Beach


Manhattan Beach's Greek and Italian restaurant, Old Venice, is our winner of the Restaurant of the Month award! Located in the heart of downtown Manhattan Beach, Old Venice has overcome a tragic fire in 2006 that completely destroyed the restaurant, as well as the passing of its owner in 2008. The venue is completely rebuilt and remodeled, and is filling up nightly. This local favorite is being revisited by longtime loyal customers as well as a new batch of visitors to the South Bay.

Cruise by and try a Gyro, Pita, Greek Salad or even share a New York-style pizza any night of the week. The menu is absolutely huge, and the wine and beer list is equally long. Bring a group or a date to this family restaurant, located only a block from the Pacific Ocean.
